Emmy award-winning producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman collaborated to create the informative The Eighties documentary special. The Eighties on Kwesé Know, on Wednesdays at 20:30 CAT, explores the individuals and events that shaped the decade and inspired the incredible inventions that changed the world.

The decade is revealed to us with archival footage and exclusive interviews with journalists, historians, musicians and artists. This seven-part documentary special covers the mixed legacy of President Ronald Reagan, AIDS, the end of the Cold War, Wall Street corruption and the information revolution.

What to look forward to on The Eighties:

The first episode gives an in-depth look at the rise of television and media. Discover how primetime soap-operas, adult dramas and family sitcoms came to occupy people’s living rooms daily. The VCR and remote control are also given the spotlight.

Video Killed the Radio Star:
Episode two looks at the digital revolution and how it took over the music scene as CDs replaced LPs, and ground-breaking music videos from the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson were released.

Episode three discusses The Fight Against AIDS. During the 80s this lethal illness developed into a pandemic resulting in various political and cultural consequences. What is said to have started out as a medical detective story, grew into a societal nightmare as many people across the world contracted the virus which became known as AIDS.

The Reagan Revolution:
A look at Ronald Reagan’s legendary two-term presidency, exploring his landmark legislative achievements and political setbacks. His recovery from an attempted assassination early in his first term garnered public sympathy and fortified self-belief in his mission to promote America’s values of freedom and individualism globally.

Greed is Good:
After the economic hardships of the 70s, the economic greed in the 80s was inevitable. This era saw a rise in Wall Street corruption, from junk bonds to bailouts, that set the tone for the decade of excess.

The end of the Cold War resolved many tensions in America, both politically and economically. Tear Down this Wall: looks at the events that led to the conclusion of the ideological battle between East and West, between communism and capitalism. The 80s began with renewed confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. But by the end of the decade a truce was reached as the values of the US prevailed.

The Tech Boom: The innovations and inventions of the digital revolution are explored in detail in this episode. Computers and the Internet, which now form part of our daily lives, were invented in the 80s. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs also established themselves in this era among the greatest innovators of all time.
