MMA (mixed martial arts) is starting to rival boxing in popularity. Even Floyd Mayweather is toying with the idea of crossing codes and taking on Connor McGregor in the hexagon. McGregor belongs to the UFC, the world’s biggest MMA league.

UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is based in Las Vegas, Nevada. South Africa has its own version of the UFC, called EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship), which is based in Johannesburg. While not has big as the UFC, the EFC has made great progress in a short space of time. It produces ten live events annually at sold out arenas. It has contracted 150 athletes exclusively and broadcasts live to over 120 countries around the world on numerous television networks in multiple languages. Indeed, it’s one of the most recognisable MMA brands on the planet.

Kwesé Sports has partnered with EFC to broadcast their events to fight audiences in Africa. This weekend the action continues in Cape Town’s entertainment venue GrandWest (EFC 68, Kwesé Sports 2 at 21:00 CAT). The event sees the EFC’s most experienced fighter, South Africa’s Martin van Staden, challenge the undefeated No.1 contender, England’s Gavin Hughes, for the vacant EFC lightweight title. And in the co-headline event former champion, USA’s Dave ‘Pain Train’ Mazany, goes head-to-head with South African MMA legend, Chris Bright.

Also on the main card Zimbabwe’s Regis Muyambo puts South Africa’s Roedie Roets to the test; Cape Town favourite Faeez Jacobs takes on England’s Cal Ellenor and Gary Joshua collides with Martin de Beer.

Don’t miss the exciting action on Kwesé Sports 2.
