Kwesé Sports brings you the Premier League Match of the Week, every Saturday at 16:00 CAT, with Preview and Build-up from 15:00 CAT. Next week (25 August) it’s Arsenal vs West Ham United.

Arsenal’s new coach, Spaniard Unai Emery, is feeling good about his big-money strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. In the opening game Lacazette started on the bench, but expect that to change as the season progresses.

The former PSG manager is searching to spark some chemistry in his go-forward options, what with playmakers Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and finishers Lacazette and Aubameyang.

In their first match of the season the Gunners went down 2-0 to Manchester City. Lacazette sat out the opening stanzas while the coach went for a 4-3-3 formation, with Aubameyang his go-to striker. But the word from the training ground is that the Spaniard is open to combining the two forwards.

When Lacazette made his appearance, in the second half, against Man City he looked hungry and sharp. And Aubameyang was happy to see him on the pitch, telling ESPN FC about the “spark” between them.

Emery had this to say on the subject: “The possibility to play Aubameyang and Lacazette is OK because we are trying like that in preseason, and last year they played together. Each match is a different possibility. For me it is to find the good balance for all that we want in attacking moments and defensive moments. I want to look at every player together, how to get Aubameyang and Lacazette scoring more goals, whether as one or together.”

And then there’s the mercurial German – Ozil. How can Emery wring full potential from the gifted playmaker? And, can Ozil play the high-intensity pressing game when not in possession? Under Wenger, Ozil was criticised for being absent on defence. The signs against Man City were not positive either; playing him in a wide role as part of a front three did not seem to suit.

But Emery is showing no signs of panic just yet; “He is playing all his career like a No. 10 or like a right winger going inside to receive the ball. It's clear he needs the ball more to give more options in the attacking moments. The positioning in the pitch is the same as usual in his career. Don't change Mesut Ozil in his positioning.”

But Ozil will have to get used to the type of all-out football Emery is after, where the team transitions seamlessly between attack and defence. “Defensive moments are for each and every player,” said Emery. “There are defensive moments and attacking moments. Every player needs this commitment to do the two moments. For me, we need to start together, whether we are attacking or defending. I want that from every player.”
