Di Maria: Ronaldo criticism is exaggerated

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria has slammed criticism aimed at Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo that suggested he was past his prime.

After breaking Barcelona’s record of 39 games unbeaten in all competitions, Zinedine Zidane’s charges embarked on a dismal spell which saw them being knocked out of the Copa Del Rey at the hands of Celta De Vigo and concede defeat to Sevilla in La Liga.

Real’s talisman and all-time top goalscorer has been at the centre of scrutiny from the the club’s fans and Di Maria, who plied his trade alongside Ronaldo during a four-year stint at the Santiago Bernabeu, says the criticism of the Portugal international captain is unfair.

“It is exaggerated,” he told Marca. “He has given so much to Madrid, as others have. He has won two Champions Leagues and people forget that a bit, they always want more.

“The same has happened with Messi, people say he’s not scoring enough, he’s not like he was before, but overnight something sparks and the goals start to flow. I don’t understand how people can question Cristiano.”
