Luis Enrique to quit as Barcelona manager

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique announced on Wednesday that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

Enrique confirmed his departure at a post-match press conference following his side’s 6-1 victory over Sporting Gijon at the Nou Camp, a victory that kept his side in the hunt for the Spanish La Liga title.

REPORT: Barca keep pressure on Real Madrid

The 46-year-old was appointed as manager at the Catalan club in May 2014 and led the team to the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey treble in the 2014/15 season.

He followed that up by winning the league and Copa de Rey titles last season but has now decided that he will not renew his contract when it expires at the end of this campaign.

Enrique told reporters: “I want to announce to everyone that I won’t continue at Barcelona next year. It’s difficult, but a decision I have thought about.

“I need to rest. That’s the main reason why I am not going to continue.”
