If there’s a division in boxing that is ‘lit, then it is the middleweight division which is why the David Lemieux against Curtis Stevens clash can’t be missed on Sunday.

The two knockout supremos will come face to face at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York in a bout billed as ‘Boxing After Dark’.

Of course, neither Canadian Lemieux nor American Stevens can afford for their lights to go out at a crucial phase in their careers.

Lemieux comes into the bout as the better rated fighter, sitting seventh in the esteemed The Ring magazine’s middleweight rankings – a list that includes household names such as Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin as well as rising stars like Cameroon’s Hassan N’Dam.

As it happens, the 28-year-old previously won the IBF belt off of N’Dam only to then lose it to Golovkin, so he desperately needs to defend his WBO-NABO middleweight title if he is to be given fights at the top end of his division again.

Stevens, as it happens, has also faced both those fighters before but lost both which will make the Brooklyner even more desperate to prove that he still belongs in the fight game in the week that he turns 32. In his 34 fights to date, Stevens has ended 21 with knockouts but at the same time he has lost five times.

That of course compares less favourably to Lemieux’s 36-3 record especially as the Canadian has a remarkable 32 KOs to his name.

That all being said, on Sunday – LIVE on Kwese Sports 2  – previous opponents, overall records and magazine rankings count for nothing. It will come down to who wants to continue having their name up in lights most and how skilfully they can do so.
