Reborn Chapecoense face Lanus in tough match

10:00 SAST | 10 Mar 2017

Brazilian club Chapecoense won their first international match since 19 players and staff were killed in November’s plane crash that saw 71 people die, but when they face Lanus in the early hours of Friday it will be a far tougher challenge.

For their first ever match in the Copa Libertadores (South America's main regional tournament), Chape had to travel the length of Brazil to the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo. There they faced Zulia, and promptly beat that country’s 2016 League runners-up 2-1.

The win put the brand-new squad assembled by new coach Vagner Mancini – made up of loan players, free signings and promoted youth players and crash survivors Neto and Ruschel - top of Group 7, which includes Clube Nacional from Uruguay and Lanus.

Much like Chapecoense, Lanus had a dream on-field season in 2016, by winning the Argentine top-flight for the first time in their 102-year history. On top of that, a month ago they comfortably beat River Plate, 3-0, to claim the country’s Super Cup so will be confident of joining Chape at the top of the table.

Chapecoense, of course, only won promotion to Brazil's top division in 2014, but they surprised everyone when they reached last year's Copa Sudamericana final so earned their right to be in Libertadores fair and square – and have their own, significant, motivation to honour their fallen heroes. The match will air on the 17th of March at 22:15 CAT live on Kwesé Sports 1.
