While three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton looks to reclaim the F1 title, it will be the first time in 23 years without a defending champion after Nico Rosberg announced his retirement.

The 31-year-old German retired five days after winning his first world title despite finishing second to Mercedes teammate Hamilton in Abu Dhabi.

"I have climbed my mountain.. so this feels right," Rosberg said. "For 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my 'one thing', to become Formula 1 world champion."

The 2017 campaign gets underway on Sunday in Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix and Hamilton has eyes on teams Ferrari and Red Bull.

Ferrari finished as the fastest team at the final set of pre-season winter testing in Barcelona.

“It looks very positive for Ferrari. They have a great car.,” said Hamilton.

“They’ve done a fantastic job and I think there’s more to come from them. Their pace has been spectacular.

“The others look very quick and it looks like we have a good battle on our hands. I don’t know if Red Bull have brought their upgrade package here, but normally they bring it to the first race. “I expect us to be having a real serious battle with both these teams.”
