The long wait for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup is almost over as reigning champions Portugal look to defend their title in the Bahamas.

In 2005, the Beach Soccer World Championship was rebranded to the name it is today. Brazil dominated World Championship by winning gold nine times. And, the Samba nation continued to reign supreme under the rebranded FIFA banner with four more titles.

Nigeria and Senegal will represent Africa in the Bahamas at the National Beach Soccer Arena in the city of Nassau.

The 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations champions, Senegal, was drawn into Group A – where they will face Ecuador on the opening day, before playing the hosts and Switzerland.

Nigeria ended a six-year absence from the Beach World Cup and were placed into Group B alongside Italy, Iran and Mexico.

Nigeria will count on the influence of Emeka Ogbonna following his impressive campaign at the CAF beach showpiece where he picked up the Most Valuable Player award.

Meanwhile, Portugal lifted the World Cup in 2015 as the host nation after 14 years, and Russia claimed back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2013.

The tournament will be unpredictable as Tahiti and Spain has shown promise at the previous two tournaments, while the most decorated nation Brazil last touched gold in 2009 and can't be overlooked.
