Against expectations Gareth Southgate’s England made it through to the semifinals of this year’s FIFA World Cup. England hadn’t appeared in a World Cup final since they won the competition in 1966 and were hoping to bring the trophy ‘back home’. It was looking good for England when Kieran Trippier scored off a set piece in the fifth minute. But the English fans probably got that sinking feeling when Harry Kane missed a perfect opportunity in the 30th minute that would have made it 2-0. Instead Perisic levelled in the second half and Mandzukic scored in extra time to give Croatia a 2-1 victory.
This Friday England travel to Croatia in the first of their home-and-away tie in the UEFA Nations League. The match is being played behind closed doors as punishment for a swastika painted on the pitch before a Croatia-Italy game in 2015. And – can you believe it – that match itself was played behind closed doors as punishment for racist chants at an earlier game.
Fortunately for England, Croatia will not only be without home support, they’ll also be without Mandzukic, who has retired from international football. But they have plenty other stars to call on, including FIFA Player of the Year Luka Modric and Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic, who has started the Premier League in fine form.
For his part, Gareth Southgate has called up some fresh young talent, including Mason Mount, James Maddison and Jadon Sancho – who was being nurtured by Manchester City before Borussia Dortmund poached him last year. Coming off the bench in the Bundesliga, Sancho has thus far played 124 minutes, scoring a goal and created five assists. You might be wondering why Dortmund don’t start with this talented youngster. But they’re spoilt for choice in attacking midfield options, with Marco Reus and Christian Pulisic in the squad. Watch the likes of Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane in action this Friday against Luka Modric’s Croatia. And then don’t miss the second leg of the Spain-England tie, which Spain lead 2-1.

Kylian Mbappe is doing great things for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring four goals this last weekend against Lyon and topping the goals’ charts in the French Ligue. There’s no shortage of talent in the French squad and those who follow the Premier League will be keeping an eye on Paul Pogba (Manchester United), N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) and Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City). Such is France’s depth that coach Didier Deschamps can afford to leave out other Premier League stars like Lacazette (Arsenal), Martial (Man United) and Laporte (Man City).
France meet Iceland on Thursday for a friendly and then take on Germany for a matchup between the 2014 and 2018 World Cup champions.
